Local Family Events for June

Some activities to get your summer started: 

Thursday, June 12th
Families After 5.  5pm-9pm.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.  Enjoy Flowers After 5 with the family and special events for kids in the Children’s Garden.  Listen to story books, garden, participate in walkabouts and have good, green fun. Featured activities will rotate based on the Children’s Garden monthly seasonal themes.  WaterPlay will remain open until 8pm.  Fee, free for members.
Friday, June 13th
Family Volunteer Day.  9am-11am.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.  Spend time with your family outdoors at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden by volunteering together in the Children’s Garden. Show your children the value of giving to the community while getting some fresh air and a beautiful view. Pre-registration required:Families must sign up in advance by filling out a group volunteer application and then reserve the desired volunteer dates online.
FROZEN Musical Playdate.  10:00am-10:40am.  Melody Magic Music Studio, 3041 Lauderdale Drive, Richmond, VA.  Kids up to age 7 will love this playdate, based on the music from the popular Disney movie “Frozen!” We will use magic frozen wands to do a freeze dance (helping our inhibitory control, of course!), drum like we are cutting ice, dance and sing with microphones, and so much more. Friday, June 13th - Thursday, June 22nd
Tarzan.  The Steward School, Robins Theatre.  Presented by CharacterWorks.   Based on Edgar Rice Burrough’s Tarzan of the Apes and the smash-hit 1999 Disney animated film, TARZAN tells the story of an infant boy orphaned on the shores of West Africa. Taken in and raised by a tribe of gorillas, the young boy strives for acceptance by his ape father while grappling with his uniqueness.  Visit the website for show times and fees.
Saturday, June 14th
Father-Child Golf Tournament.  First Tee of Chesterfield, 6736 Huntingcreek Drive.  Introduce your children of all ages to the game or bond with your teen on the course. Build Toothless.  10am.  Local Lowes Stores.  Bring your child to Lowe’s and they can build Toothless from How To Train Your Dragon 2.  Visit the website to register.  Free.
FREE demo kids fitness class.  11am.  Richmond Balance Fitness, Downtown Location, 1806 East Main Street. This is a demo class for children ages 2-5.  Free.
Bumblebee Jamboree.   11am-3pm.  Maymont Children’s Farm Lawn.  Families can enjoy live butterflies, crafts for the kids and more! Sponsored by Chesterfield County Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension.  Free admission.
Sweet Spot Soda Tasting.  2pm-3pm. Sweet Spot, 2228 Old Brick Road, Glen Allen, VA 23026.
Kids Night Out.  6pm-9pm.  Romp n’ Roll Midlothian, 1541 Busy Street, Midlothian VA 23236.  Every kid deserves a special night out…and so do you!  Parents get an evening to themselves while the children get to run and play with energetic instructors and enjoy a pizza party dinner.  No need to be a member; register by calling 804-893-3142. (Members: $20 for one child, $35 for two children, $40 for three children. Non-Members: $25 for one child, $40 for two children, $45 for three children; no discounts apply, children must be siblings to qualify for pricing.)
Sunday, June 15th
Father’s Day.  1pm-4pm.  Celebrate the man in your life with family fun, model boats, live music, and a tasty cookout (for purchase).  Enjoy a free concert (included in Garden admission) by the Jangling Reinharts down at the Bloemendaal House where food will be available for purchase. The Richmond Model Yacht Club will also be on-site showing off different model boats on Sydnor Lake.   Included with Garden admission; includes Butterflies LIVE! exhibit.
Father’s Day Ice Cream Social. 4pm-6pm.  Walkerton Tavern.  Treat your family to delicious free Bruster’s ice cream while listening to the music of the Henrico Concert Band, making homemade ice cream, and playing your favorite backyard games. Tours of these historic gems will also be available. Free.
Monday, June 16th
Garden Art Studio.  1pm-3pm.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  Work alongside staff artist, Katelyn Coyle, in the colorful Garden Art Studio located beside the Hidden Tunnel. Drop-in and unfold your creative energy. Use provided materials to collaborate, explore and reflect on your own Garden experience.  Free with Garden admission.
Tuesday, June 17th
Young @ Art: Pictures & Puzzles.  10am-11am .  Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Art Education Center.  For kids ages 2 ½ – 5.  Explore collage and assemblage by piecing together different shapes and materials for your own fantastic creations.  Fee.
Garden Explorations for Families.  10:15am.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  For children 3-5 years (older siblings welcome) with accompanying adult.  Enjoy story time and a fun-filled adventure while exploring different areas of the Garden. We observe our surroundings using a variety of hands-on activities and take-home treasures. Themes change each month and new stories, activities and garden areas are introduced each week.  Fee.
Tuesday, June 17th & Wednesday, June 18th
Hotel Transylvania & The Smurfs 2.  10am.  Regal Virginia Center Stadium, Regal Commonwealth Center Stadium, Regal Westchester Commons Stadium, Regal Short Pump Stadium.  Seating on a first come-first served basis.  Admission to these films during the Summer Movie Express is only $1.
Wednesday, June 18th
Drop in and Dig!  9am-11am.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  Families with children are invited to drop-in and participate in simple, easy to learn gardening tasks under the guidance of Children’s Garden staff and volunteers. These family-oriented gardening experiences can easily be enjoyed at home. Free with Garden admission.

Summer Science Family Fun.  9:30am to 5:00pm.  Science Museum of Virginia.  Venture into the sunshine to celebrate monsters, from the iconic Bigfoot #1 The Original Monster Truck® to a monster trebuchet sending items soaring through the air. Down on the Farm Day.  10am-4pm.  Children’s Museum of Richmond – Central.  This event is part of CMoR’s Annual Summer Series.  Make fun farm-themed projects, meet The Dairy Princesses of VA, visit with a real live cow and baby calf, interact with VA Sport Horses’ Therapy Horses, and visit with animals from the Teeny Tiny Farm. American Art—Free Style!  1pm-4pm.  VMFA Atrium & Sculpture Garden.  Dig deep into the roots of African American culture and identity with performances by a barbershop quartet and a hip hop dance group, as well as call-and-response storytelling.  Demonstrations of braiding, wrapping, headdressing, and hat-making by artists and stylists throughout the event. Participants will also receive complimentary admission to the special exhibition Posing Beauty in African American Culture thanks to a sponsorship from Richmond (VA) Chapter, The Links, Incorporated.  Free, no registration required.

Sunday, June 22nd
Reenactment of the Second Virginia Convention and Henry’s “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!”.  1pm-3pm.  St. John’s Church.   1:15 pm — Doors open.  Seating is on a first-come, first served basis.  1:30 pm — Music program.  1:45 pm — Reenactment begins.  This event is also FREE, with a suggested donation of $5.00.  Reservations are available for groups of ten or more for fee of $5 per person, up to 100 reserved seats.
John McCutcheon Concert.  7:00pm. Maggie Walker Governor’s School Auditorium, 1000 N. Lombardy Street. The concert will include a tribute to activist and American folk singer, Pete Seeger. Tickets can be reserved and purchased at http://www.rpec.org/mccutcheon or by calling the Richmond Peace Education Center at 804-232-1002. Tickets will cost $25.00 for adults ($90.00 for a package of 4) and $10.00 for students.

Come join us as we celebrate all the fun of water, splashing, jumping, swimming, and more! This class is great for anyone wanting a fun music class for their child ages 0-7 years. Highlights of Hollywood Cemetery Walking Tour.  New evening tour, 6pm-7:30pm.  Meet at the rear of the stone structure on the left at the entrance at Cherry and Albemarle Streets.  Learn about the cemetery’s history, artwork, symbolism and famous residents, including two U.S. presidents, writer Ellen Glasgow, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Generals George Pickett and J.E.B. Stuart.  Fee.
Henrico Community Band in the Park.  7pm.  Deep Run Park.  Bring a blanket or lawn chair and spend a casual evening in the park at the Nature Pavilion listening to your favorite band music! In case of inclement weather, the concerts may be cancelled. There will be no rain dates. Free.

Saturday, June 28th
Henricus Mudstock.  Henricus Historical Park, 251 Henricus Park Road.  The first annual Henricus Mudstock—A 5k mud run through Henricus Historical Park. Afterwards sit back and get funky at the post-race dance party, and let the music heal your soul. We even have a one-mile run for the Flower Children!   Details and registration information: www.sportsbackers.org.  Fee.
4th Annual Arts & Culture Xpo.  10am-4pm. Greater Richmond Convention Center.  The Arts & Culture Xpo is an explosion of the arts, history, science, and family fun for the Richmond Region – all under one roof on one day.  Enjoy Xpo-only discounts on memberships, classes, tickets, subscriptions, performances, education programs and more, A variety of stage performances throughout the day highlighting local arts and culture organizations including musical, visual art, theatrical, historical and dance, Hands-on learning activities including art demos, cultural interactions, and more!  Free admission.
Spider-Man and Friends.  11am and 1:30pm.  Children’s Museum of Richmond – Central.  This event is part of CMoR’s Annual Summer Series.  Marvel super hero characters will be at CMoR Central for LIVE shows at 11am and 1:30pm. This show may not be appropriate for children ages 3 and under.  Free with museum admission.
Pow Wow on the Landing.  Noon-6pm.  Osborne Park & Boat Landing.  Youghtanund, an inter-tribal Native American drum group, in cooperation with Henrico Recreation and Parks, is hosting the first pow wow held at Osborne Park. The event will begin with a traditional opening ceremony followed by various drum and dance performances. Concessions will be available for purchase. If you are interested in drumming or dancing in the event, please call Terry Price at 387-0655.  Free.
5th Annual Honeybee Festival.  Noon-5pm.  Rockwood Nature Center, 3401 Courthouse Road.  Enjoy music, face-painting, arts and crafts, honey and other bee items for sale, refreshments, games and nature activities.
